September 13. - sumed at 7.30. DiTlodgkinsou moved the secou 1 reading of the Deceased Wife’s Sister’s’Bill, which was carried on a division of 41 to 43. The Auckland 1 Harbor Foreshore Sale Bill was read.a second time. • T1 ie Port Chalmers Mechanics Institute 1 Reserve,Bill, and thoTapanui Agricultural and Pastoral Association Bill wore lead a third time and passed. Canterbury Reserves Amendment and. Local Option Bills were furtherconsidered, in committee. . : ' ■ ' ■■ : ) The House met on Thursday afternoon, at 2.30. .. , . ; In reply to Mr Rees, the Premier said the justification ‘ pleaded in the Waka Maori libel case was on the advice, of the law officers and counsel. The House ; would be asked to vote costs and damages. i The Premier, in replying to' Mr Ballauce, promised.papers relating' to the Murimaitu Block.; , '■ ■-i 1 ' i■ ■’ , The following new Billswere introduced: —Hokitika Education Reserve Bill (Stout), Settlements Works Allowances Act (Reid), Volunteers and Others Lands Bill (heid), .Dunedin Gaol and Street Contraction Bill (Reid), Dunedin Corporation and Harbour Board Bill (Larnach). The Hon Mr Ormond • asked leave ,to make a personal explanation. He desired to withdraw the remarks ho made in his speech on Mr Rees’ motion, implying that Sir George Grey was a partner in the Taupo Land Company, when the letters about ground rent, &c., were written. He had .misunderstood the information given him, and desired to withdraw his remarks, which were based on misapprehension. Mr Bums’ Railway Rolling Stock motion, as amended by Mr Sheehan, was agreed to on the voices, without further discussion. September 14.
In the Assembly last night, Mr Fyke’s motion for long service pay being continued to the provincial police was withdrawn, on assurance from the Government that the sum required be placed on the Supplementary Estimates. • Sir G. Grey complained of Mr Ormond’s personal explanation being made in bis absence.
Mr Ormond repeated what lie had said before dinner. Messrs Sheehan and Rees said it did not touch t!le real charge at all, which was*— that Sir G. Grey had, for personal interest, abused his position as Governor. Sir G. Grey said lie treated the charge and its author with contempt. lie had evidence to prove that at the very time the land company was endeavoring' to procure the Tanpo land, he was trying to assist native owners to stock part of the very land the company wanted. After a long discussion, Mr Tahoa’s Crown Redress Extension Bill No. 1, was read a second time on a division of 48 to ;3. Its object is to enable the Middle island natives to bring before the Supreme Court alleged mifn filled promises made hy Colonel Wakefield and others, when the land was bought. The South Rakaia Road Board Bill No. 2, was read a second time on a division of 25 to 19. The Oamarn Atlienamm and Mechanics Institute Reserve Bill was read a third time. The House rose at 1.10 a.m.
