The Wanganui Gas Bill was read a second time In reply to questions, Government said that the petitioners (Small and Barlow) would be paid costs ; that they would nut at present open a Post Ofiice at Kakatakai; that if the parents of any deaf, dumb, or blind children were unable to pay the cost, Government would assist to send them to the Victorian Asylum ; and that Government did not intend to pay the Otago police for long service, or give extra pay. George Jones was brought to the bar of the House, to answer a charge of breach of privilege, in an article on Mr Whitaker, in relation to Native Lands Bill : in reply to question from the Speaker, whether he had any explanation to offer, he read long statement, which Mr Whitaker looked upon as an aggravation of the offence, and was supported in that opinion by the Speaker and other members of the House. Mr Whitaker wished Jones to be discharged, so that he could sue him for libel in the Supreme Court. A debate followed, which was interrupted by the arrival of 5.30 p.m.
