BALL ROAD.

(To the Editor of the Pate a Mail.) Sir — l see at the last meeting of the Patea West Road Board; it was resolved that the settlers on Ball Road were requested to help the Board—that is, to pay rates and pay to get the work done. Now. Mr Editor, can any of the ratepayers in the district, or can you enlighten me, wbat any of the members of the Board have done themselves towards making the roads. They may say, they gave tlieir tiine.- . Granted p-bufc if they did not, others are ready, and willing, to do so. , - ■ ■' ' ■ ' Now, Mr Houeyfield-wants a. road to his land. Well, there is a deviation required, and compensation to be paid. To what amount is he willing’ to assist the Board ? Now, Mr Hunter wants a little .more spent on Garsed Road. Certainly he ought to have a share, considering there has never-been much spent on the road—-perhaps, say £l5O. Now, Mr E. R. Morgan, he has had, I cannot say the exact amount, expended on the Crompton Road. There was a track cut through the bush to get on to his land. So far, so good; but that was not enough. He must go in and get the bush foiled the chain wide,- anT”' what assistance did ho give to the Board? But now, when we- want a track, if only 12 feet.wide, we are told we will have to help to bear the extra expense.

That,is the. stylo of the Patea West Road Board’Commissioners, is it ? If they, themselves, require a track, they are entitled, to it; but, surely, some of the other ratepayers are entitled to a track, without felling the timber a chain wide.

If they meant retrenchment, what does all of this advertising mean ? Also pay a secretary £lO a-year more than any necessity for, as I knowlvlr Whelan tendered for the secretaryship for £2O, and they gave Mr Dale £3>. I heard it said, Mr Whelan did not understand that he would have to collect the rales. Well, that was nothing to do with the Board, as he would have to find sureties, and the ratepayers would save £lO. Perhaps that may have helped (o make our road. . So much for Rab and Company.—l am, &c., WOODVILLE.
