A BATCir>of correspondence relative to scab at-Maputahi, received from Governs merit Horner, Esq., comprising about forty letters and telegrams, has % been-Handed over for publication. Hold yourself in readiness to go down at once.’*—A secqnd.: telegram was forwarded on the same date, stating ' “ The scab is at; Manutahi; You must proceed there at once, and report, fully to the office of the secretary |of Crown lands.” i ;i ■ Telegram dated iPatea, March 14, frjom Major Atkinson to Mr Hately (who fvas then at .Wanganui).;— <c The, scab isj at Manutahi.. Sir,-—I have the honor to report that, according to the request of the Premier, I proceeded' to Manutahi, to inspect the flock of sheep belonging to Mr Peacock: that I inspected said flock of sheep, likewise sheep in the neighbourhood, and found them free from scab. ,Mr Peacock’s sheep were affected with lice. Telegram dated March 22, from Sec-, retary crown lands ,Wellington (J' Giles,' Esq.), to Mr Simpson, sheep inspector, Rangitikei, telling the . latter that Major Atkinson wished him to - communicate :with Mr Hately, for the purpose of going to Taranaki, to examine together the, sheep said to be scabby, and to report soon. Telegram dated March 22, from Secretary crown lands, Wellington, ( to Mr Hately, giving him Mr Simpson’s address, ami telling him to arrange meeting and report soon. (Telegram) Gov. Buildings, Mar 22. To William Hately, New. Plymouth. Have received a telegram, signed by a : large number of respectable settlers at Patea, requesting further inspection. Have full confidence m your report, but, in order to satisfy sheep owners at Patea, I propose to send up Mr Simpson to report. He will he directed to examine sheep, with you. ,Please,‘therefore,. communicate with him, and, arrange to meet at Manutahi. Tie has been telegraphed to the same effect. ■ : •H. A. Atkinson.

Telegram dated New: Plymouth, March 23,. from Mr Hately to Major Atkinson.— “ Please notify to Simpson I will bp at Peacock’s on Tuesday next. Important I should be back here by end of week.” Telegram dated March 24, from Mr J. Giles, Wellington, to Mr Simpson, Rangi-; tikei. —“ Hately will be at Peacock’s Tuesday. Please meet him without fail.” Telegram dated Marton, March |24, from Mr Simpson to Major Atkinson, notifying that he would meet Mr Hately as requested. (Letter) New Plymouth, March 2s. ‘ Sir, —According to instructions received from the Premier, by telegram, I proceeded to Manutahi, to meet Mr Simpson,"inspector of sheep, Turakina, for the purpose of inspecting Messrs Peacock’s pnd Byrnes’ flocks of sheep. We discovered that Byrnes’ flock of sheep was scabby. Peacock having dipped his sheep three times the scab insect could not-be detected, but in Mr Syme's’ flock, they never having been dipped, the insect was discovered at once. I declared to Mr Symes that ■ his flock was scabby. All the necessary preliminary precautions have . been taken to confine the disease to ( his flock, and I have no fear but it will be stamped out of’the district.-

Examined with Mr Hately, Mr Peacock’s flock, which was being dressed the third time, and had evidently been very bad with scab. - Also-examined Messrs Symes’ flock, which; was also infected with scab.
