CABLE MESSAGES.
[Per Press Agency.] GREA T BATTLE. SYDNEY. August 2. A. telegram published here, dated London. August 1, states that a battle lasting two days was fought between tiie Russians and Turks at Nicopolis, in which the latter gained a decisive victory. The Russian loss was 8,000 killed and 'IG,OOO wounded. BOMBAY. August 1. The Bungnlorc, with the Suez mail, left Galle on the 31st idt. Russia has not answered Earl Derby’s despatch re the atrocities committed by Christians on Mussulmans in Bulgaria. There has been further disorderly scenes in the House of Commons. August 2. After twenty-four hours continuous fighting the Russians were reinforced, advancing from Ardahan. The advanced guard is near Pennck. The defeat of the Russians at Plevna is admitted The Turkish forces were acting on the defensive. Their loss is relatively small. The African Bill has passed the House o Commons.
