IN PARLIAMENT.
Wellington August 1. Replying to questions in the Assembly Government said they had no intention this session of bringing in a Bill to amend th'-> Medical Practitioners Registration Act 18G9. —Establishing penny savings-banks in public schools, was a question for the Education Board. The Government would assist if required.—Tiie Government were responsible for the cost of the Waka Maori libel action. Mr Curtis’ motion to limit speakers to 20 minutes, unless by the leave of the House, was negatived on the voices. Government offered no objection to financial year ending on 31st March. Motion by Mr MacFarlano that the Government should promise to levy no duty on the beet sugar manufactured in the colony for ten years,was referred to a committee. A return was ordered for the details of the cost of the Hinemoa when she arrived here, August 2. On resuming last night, Mr Rees, in reference to tiie Waka Maori libel case, gave notice of motion condemning any Ministry that used its influence and means in defending an action brought by one private individual against another to recover damages for alleged libel. The following speakers opposed .the Charitable Institutions Bill: —Sir George Grey, Messrs DeLatonr, Bastings, and Rollcston. —Sir George Grey made a long speech, denouncing the Bill and all its provisions. The following speakers supported the second reading of the Bill: —Messrs Bowen, Maunders, Russell, Joyce, Dtout, Wliitakor, Kennedy, Fitzroy, Stafford, Brandon, amd Reid. After a Jong debate the Hon Mr Reid replied and the second reading was carried by 42 against 11. The Government said they had no intention of making any further nominations to (ho Legislaiive Council this year The Hon. Mr McLean told" Mr Rees that ho was unaware of telegraph officials having altered any Press telegrams. Mr Rees tli ii gave notice for a committee to inquire into the matter. Arrangements are being’ made for opening telegraph ulliees at ail the principal railway stations. The Triennial P irliamonts. and the Manhood Suffrage Bills were read a first time. A return of the cost of the iniiway commission was ordered. Messrs Burns, Reader Wood, and others commented in the strongest terms on what they considered the gross mismanagement of our railways. A select committee is appointed to inquire into the necessity for the weather reporting and storm signalling department being continued. It will also inquire into the working of the Hinemoa and Stella.
