JOTTINGS FROM HAWERA.

Till', young men of this town have at last determined to keep pace with the march of intellect hy instituting a Mutual Improvement Association. The preliminary meeting, I understand, will be held after the public meeting on Wednesday evening. 'Fins is a step in the right direction,-the inlluence for good direct and indirect will be a lasting one for those who join and take an active part in the Association. I have in my mind’s eye several who, on first joining a similar society, were arrant dnll’ers in the art of speaking, but who now can hold their own with credit in any assembly. Men may read and bo scholars, but, unless they have opimrtnnities for pracl King, they never can become public speakers. The opportunity is now before the young men of this district, and as they have shown their prowess in many other respects, 1 hope they will not he backward in supporting this enterprise for their mutual benefit. The Chess Club is now in a most flourishing condition ; Mr W. (i. Wiiite has been elected President in place of (’apt. Kenny, who, nmols against his own inclination found it necessary to resign, knowing lie could nut attend very regularly. Mr Mason was elected VicePresident, and the Pc.'. Father Perlnis a member of committee. Our Wesleyan friends intend to hold an entertainment very shortly, which will consist of readings, recital ions, and singing. Friends outside the denomination will, doubtless, be found willing to assist. The Sunday-school has been reorganised. Mr d>- Idingle, and Mr John Winks being the chief workers. It will be held in the Presbyteiian Church, but it is distinctly understood that the school is undenominational.
