(FROM a CORRESPOND ENT.) July 19. Owing to unfavorable weather, etc., our Mutual Improvement Society did not moot for a fortnight. Wednesday, the 18th instant, being line, there was a good attendance of members. Mr Dawson was voted to the chair. Mr Peacock being prevented by circumstances from bringing forward his subject of “Water Carriage v. Roads and Kailways,” Mr K. 15. Hamilton brought on “The best and cheapest way to bringr a rough farm under grass,” and confined nis observations to the district between Kaupokonui and Wanganui. He advocated burning olf tbe fern in February, instead of March, and sowing with rye-grass and a smaller proportion eacli of white and red clovers ; then keeping the fern down with cattle. He was opposed to ploughing before sowing the grass seeds. He was ably seconded by Mr Peacock. Mr Gutbrie opposed, and said land would carry more stock and yield better grass if ploughed before being sown down ; and that a greater variety of grasses, as cocksfoot, Timothy, cow grass, &c , should bo sown. He was strongly supported by Air Ginger. After a warm discussion Air Hamilton’s moibod was declared carried. A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the evening. Since our previous meeting the Blockhouse ceiling has been whitewashed, which is a very decided improvement to the building Tor the various uses to which it is put.
