DOG TAX PROFIT.
(To the Editor of the Patea Mail.) Sid—ls there any way of knowing who pays for advertising the calling for rates to be paid, as I have seen Mr Cowern commenced for Road rates last March, then spelled for awhile, then after about seven weeks he starts again on the same subject (May 21). On May 15, Mr Black (County Clerk), starts on the Dog Tax, stating, as well as Mr Cowern. that the rates have to be paid within a certain time, or legal proceedings will be taken to recover the same. As for the Road rates, no sneing was necessary, I presume, as the ratepayers had plenty of time either to pay, or not, and plenty of notice. Now for the Dog tax. I see, in 1875, the amount collected was £26 Is ; cost of collecting, £ls 15s. In 1876, the amount collected was £32 8s ; cost of collecting, £l6 4s. In 1877, the amount collected was £ls 4s. Has the number of dogs diminished, as the cash is much less this year, or is the advertisement like others, pay if you like —if not, don’t. —I am, &c., ONE that perhaps WILL PAY.
