JOTTINGS FROM HAWERA. The success of the meeting called for the purpose of discussing important questions connected with the Hawera Town Hall Company, exceeded the expectations of the agitators. T. Middlemas, Esq., was voted to the chair. The Directors attended, and although the meeting was illegally called together, they assisted very materially in ventilating the questions brought forward. All the propositions were carried, the first being to the effect “ that the erection of the Hall be proceeded with at once,” and the other “ that the proposed site be changed.” If the latter resolution is carried into effect, the Hall will face towards the Post Office. At the conclusion of the meeting, numbers of the shareholders desired that a legal meeting might be called, so that the measures may be carried more effectively. The meeting passed off in an exceedingly jokuous and amusing manner, everyone seeming to thoroughly enjoy the mixture of fun and business. Our young men are taking active steps towards forming a Chess Club. _ They hope to secure the advice and assistance of Captain Kenny, who is a veteran chess player. I hope your readers will excuse the little vanity I naturally feel in being able to remark that my modest election prophecy was verified—the two gentlemen pointed out being at the head of the poll.
