WATCHING.
(To the Editor of the Patea Mail.)
Sir, —I noticed in your issue of the 30th instant, that Eab, the person who publicly notified that lie intended ratepayers interests, and to see specially that their funds were expended judiciously, requires watching himself.
I see from the minutes of the last Patea West Road Board meeting, that Messrs John Whelan and Wm. Dale tendered for the office of secretary—the tender of the former being £2O per annum, either for Kakaratnea or Carlyle ; that of the latter being £3O for Carlyle, or £35 for Kakaramea, at which latter place the Board have decided to hold their meetings. Now, Sir, Rab proposed that the tender of Mr Dale be accepted, which was carried. There you see, Mr Editor, is £ls per annum voted away deliberately by Eab, who promised to watch the ratepayers interests.
I maintain that there is nothing difficult to do in connection with Road Boards that Mr Whelan could not do just as well as the successful candidate, and perhaps better, as he could give more time to it. Therefore the lowest tender should have been accepted.—l am, &c., a ratepayer, Who is watching Rab. Carlyle, May 31, 1877.
