WAVERLEY.
(FROM AN OCCASIONAL CORRESPONDENT.) May 29th, 1877. Last night was the usual meeting of the Temperance people, and about thirty (members and non-members) put in an appearance. It was really gratifying to see so many meeting together, for the purpose of discussing the Temperance question—a reform which is being so ably advocated by so many able men at Home at the present time, as well as by earnest men in other parts of the world, and in the Australasian Colonies—our own little island home contributing not a few.
Meeting together for discussion is creating a taste for reading. Accordingly a Library Fund has been formed, and to start with, no less than £5 was subscribed by the persons then assembled in the room. A committee will arrange as to procuring modern books to suit varying tastes, which will form the beginning of what, it is hoped, will grow into a large library. It has also been decided to enliven the long winter evenings by holding what are popularly known as “Penny .Readings,” once a fortnight. There is plenty of talent in the district, and if a good example is shown at the start by a few earnest men, a little coaxing will draw the shy ones forward, and of course all will be benefited. The first fortnightly entertainment will be held in the Town Hall on Monday week next.
Next Wednesday, the 6th of June, will approach to a Gala Day, as the Hon. W. Fox will be present to lay the Foundation stone of our proposed new Presbyterian Church, and as on the occasion of the late Bazaar, settlers from far and near will honor the event by their presence, provided the weather is decently fine. In any case the Foundation stone will be laid. The time appointed being two o’clock in the afternoon. - A meeting of settlers is convened for six o’clock the same evening, to discuss the railway question; and at eight o’clock, there will be sure to be a full muster, to hear the Hon. Mr Fox deliver his highly interesting lecture on “ America.” We are hoping, and shall be happy to see, all the Carlyle friends who can possibly attend.
