[Per Press Agency.] NEW PLYMOUTH. May 8. In the Supreme Court, befoio Mr Justice Gillies, there was only one person .for trial—C. E. Meredith, late clerk to the R.M. Court, Carlyle and liawera. He was found guilty of embezzlement, and sentenced to two years imprisonment. A shock of earthquake was felt this morning at 7.20. WELLINGTON. May 8. Mr Justice Richmond this morning gave Ins verdict in the suit of the trustee of Worgan v. Curie. He decided that liquidation resolution in Worgan’s estate had not been agreed to by the requisite number of creditors ; that it was void ; and therefore, that the trustees had no right to bring the suit. As to the further question, whether the 3rd section of the Act of 187G validated the proceedings of the trustees, he thought the appointment at initis was wrong, and decided in the negative. A verdict was therefore entered for the defendant. News has been received here that the cable between Amoy and Shanghai is broken. CHRISTCHURCH. May 8. At the R.M. Court, a number of publicans were summoned for neglecting to take out licenses for the extra bars—J. Barratt, of the Devonshire Arms Hotel, was taken as a test case. The evidence showed that there were half-doors and small windows at which persons, while standing in the passage or in a room which opened into the street, could bo served with liquor from the bar. The counsel for the defence urged that it was absurd to call these separate bars—no such definition was placed on the word “ bar” in England, nor could it in common sense be done here. The Bench said ‘-The Licensing Act, 1873,” distinctly said the word “bar” should be deemed to include any room, passage, or lobby opening immediately on to the street, in which the public are supplied with refreshments. A fine of Mo was imposed. Notice of appeal was given. The other cases wore adjourned sine die.

CARLYLE TOWN BOARD. The usual monthly meeting of the above Board was held at the Court House, on Monday evening- last. Present—Messrs Milroy, Taplin, McCarthy, Hirst, Rhodes, and Williams. The Chairman having gone to New Plymouth, Mr Milroy was voted to the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Amongst the correspondence read, were two letters from Mr G. D. Hamerton, of New Plymouth—one stating that the deeds were nearly all registered, and would bo forwarded without delay ; and the other acquainting the Board that he had drawn on them to the amount of £4O 13s for registration, and asking them to protect the draft.—As no cheque could be paid without the chairman’s signature, the following resolution was proposed by Mr Taplin, seconded by Mr Rhodes, and carried—“ That the acting chairman bo empowered to sign a cheque in payment of Mr Hamerton’s draft, in conjunction with other two members of the Board.” A discussion arose relative to the letting of reserves, when it was decided, on the motion of Mr Williams, seconded by Mr Rhodes, “That the leasing of the reserves be postponed till the next meeting of the Board.” —It was explained that the next election took place in June, and it would he bettor for the new Board to deal with tiieso matters. Mr D. M. Harris was appointed clerk to the Board, at a salary of £SO per annum. —The Chairman said lie hoped the clerk would make himself thoroughly acquainted with the ditferent Acts relating to local bodies, as be would be looked to for information. On the motion of Mr Williams, seconded by Mr McCarthy, it was resolved that the work in Mcrcdith-street he proceeded with without delay. Mr W. Co worn was elected Returning Officer to the Board, at a salary of £1 per day when employed in that capacity. (Ja the motion of Mr Taplin, seconded by Mr Williams, it was decided to ask the County Council for the use of one of their rooms to hold meetings in. The clerk was instructed to collect all property belonging to the Board, and hand in a list of the same at the next meeting. The Board then adjourned.
