RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Thursday, March 22. (Before Captain Wray, R.M.) John Beamish, proprietor of the Masonic Hotel, sued Major Turner and Dr Walker for the sum of A3 2s (id, for board and lodging's supplied to a man named James Lawrie, on the order of defendants.— John Beamish deposed : I received an order in June last, signed by Major Turner and Dr Walker (order produced), asking me to receive and accommodate James Lawrie, at the usual charge of £1 per week ; no liquors to be allowed. I found him in accommodation for three weeks and two days ; at the end of which time I received instructions not to supply him with accommodation any longer. I then made out a voucher for the expenses incurred, had it signed by Major Turner and Dr Walker, and forwarded it to the Provincial Treasurer at Taranaki for payment. I received a letter in reply, telling me that the expenses incurred were unauthorised, and that I should have to look for payment from the persons who gave the order. I then made application to Major Turner, Dr Walker, and Mr Cowcrn, and was informed in each case that they would not pay the amount. Finding no other means to get my money, I instituted these proceedings.—The R.M. said that on hearing of the matter a few days ago, he made enquiries, and was told by Mr Coworn, Provincial Agent, that the reason the Treasury did not accept the voucher, was that it did not bear his (Mr Cowern’s) signature ; but he would make out a fresh voucher and forward it to the Treasurer, whom he had no doubt would transmit the money. He (the R.M.) would therefore adjourn the case for a fortnight, if the parties concerned were willing. There being no objection, the case was adjourned accordingly. Friday, March 23. (Before Captain Wray, R.M.) Civil Case. —J. Gibson v W. 11. Inman, judgment summons for £4 10s not yet satisfied.., Judgment given for half the amount to be paid at once, and the balance within a month ; or in default, one month’s imprisonment.
