[Pee Press Agency.] AUCKLAND. January 19. The returns furnished by the relieving officer show that 268 adults are in receipt of relief in Auckland. This includes old women and women ill refuge. The well at Secombe’s brewery, which supplied the town when the Domain water fell off, collapsed last night. The debris has completely filled up the well, burying the pumping gear and machinery. The damage is estimated at £I,OOO. The Star states, on the authority of the Attorney - General, that where Comities Act is not brought fully into operation, or no rate levied, the subsidy on the basis of the total amount of rates collected by the highway districts in the coltnty will still be payable. Where the permissive clauses of the Counties Act are suspended, the county subsidies will he paid direct to the highway hoards. January 20. William Rose has teen charged with obtaining goods under false pretences from two Auckland merchants, and is said to have been guilty of a similar offence against John Gibson, of Patea. The prisoner was arrested while taking out two local Hebes. He has been remanded for the arrival of Mr Gibson. ALEXANDRA. , January 19. At a meeting of the County Council today, it was unanimously resolved that the Chairman should communicate with the Government respecting the late outrage by the King Natives at Pirongia, asking that the proprietor of the land be protected in peaceful occupation of his property, and that immediate steps be taken to protect the inhabitants of the County in ihe neighborhood of Pirongia.

The assessed value of rateable properties in Christchurch this year is £180,362, being an increase of £32,651 on last year. NELSON. January 19. The protest against the Eclipse, the winner of the junior four-oared race, was disallowed. After hearing the protest entered by the yacht Secret, the committee decided that the race should be run again, but Richardson, the owner of the Gannett, declined, on the ground that he fairly won, and has served a notice on the treasurer, holding him responsible for the money and the cup. All the money won by the visitors was paid to them last night. WELLINGTON. January 20 The Armed Constabulary has now been reduced by nearly 200 men and 13 olTleors. The police in the Middle Island and elsewhere are being enrolled under the Armed Constabulary Act, to enable the above reduction to be made. The position of the police force will not thereby be affected as to pay, and would only bo called upon to serve as A.C.’s in case of emergency. Arrived—Leicester, ship, from London, 87 cloys out, with 400 immigrants, and 11 saloon passengers. Lieilt-Colonel McDonnell, wife and child are passengers by her. January 23. At an inquest to-day upon the body of one of four men drowned yesterday, the jury added a rider to the effect that in all sailing races everyone in the boat should be compelled to wear a life belt, DUNEDIN. For Europe 17,000 tons of refining sugars were sold at 8 dollars ; finest sold at 8 dollars i white at 9 dollars, 50 cents refused ; white crystals sold at 9 dollars. Nothing shipping for New Zealand, _ An Equity suit Was opened in the Supreme Court yesterday, which, according to counsel for the plaintiff, leads to a question of forgery and possibly of perjury, and possesses features as romantic as those I celebrated cases recorded In Warren’s “ Ten Thousand a Year,” and Anthony Trollope’s “ Orley Farm.” The plaintiff is Thomas Robertson, an old settler, living at Anderson’s Bay, and he seeks to set aside a deed of conveyance to bis son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs D. M, Ross, of Timaru, on the ground that the deed in question was procured by fraud. The property involved is said to be Worth £BOOO. At yesterday’s sitting of the Court, defendant and plaintiff were examined, and the further hearing of the case was adjourned till ten o’clock this morning. HOKITIKA. January 23. The Tararua arrived from Sydney yesterday, bringing the English Cricketers, but no fresh Australian news.
