FRANCIS RELIEF FUND.
(to the editor of the patea mail.) Sir, —On the 13th November last, a meeting of the Inhabitants of Carlyle, was called to lake steps for the relief of the family of Mr Francis, he being at the time confined in Hospital, and his wife and family in great distress. The case was considered so urgent that a sum of £4 was collected in the room for their immediate benefit, from which they received £3 ; and as a further relief, an entertainment was hold in the Town Hall on the lOtii November, which realised over £l4, and which was to be given Francis on his recovery. Although two months have elapsed since, nothing more lias been done in the matter. 1 have heard (the truth of which I cannot vouch for) that the committee, without tire consent of either Francis or the subscribers, have appropriated a part of the £ls balance in payment of In’s (Francis’) debts. I ask what right, have they to do so? The legality of which I very much doubt, the lummy being given for quite a dilforent purpose. —I am, &e., Fair Play.
