There were 51 representatives present and 32 visitors. The trial of Curtin for the murder of Denis Shanaghan is si ill proceeding. Mrs Rhanaghan gave evidence that, two months before the murder, she and a girl namsd Annie McDonald, when on their way home from church, went into Curtin’s and had tea. January 10. Curtin was found guilty, and sent (mend to death. Mr lines, for the defence, called Annie McDonald, who said she had heard Rhanaghan threaten to kill Curtin ; had ween him driving prisoner’s cattle ; eight months ago Curtin went to Curtin’s imnsg and Shanaghan chased him away. John Parr, a settler, deposed that Shanaghan had unde threats against the prisoner, and that they vow frequently quarrelled. A special meeting of the Harbour Board was called to consider the question of the enlargement of the dock. The dock under construction has only twelve feet on the sill. The Primitive Methodist Conference closed to-day. The Church reports of last rear show increased prosperity. Five new clmroiiea have been built. A Canterbury passenger by the mail afoanvT Australia writes to (he Christchurch ' apers, complaining bitterly of the treatment received hy all the passengers while in quarantine in Auckland. lie slates that the quarantine barracks were flllliy, and without firmer, and that no food was received from Auckland for two or three days. He also states that the mails were'fumigated in a very inefficient mann°r and urges that an inquiry should he made into the whole circumstances of flic ease. A new American reaping and binding machine has been tried here with great success. It is calculated to save Gj per acre in the cost of lahou", and a’so effect a considorab’e saving in grain, which is tied up much cleaner than men can do it January 12. At a special sitting of the Court of Appeal held this morning, before the Chief Justice, and Judge Johnston, in the case of Regina, v. Woodgate, Dr. Foster and Mr Rogers appeared for prisoner, who was convicted at Nelson for the murder of bis illegitimate child in a lonely part of Queen Charlotte's Sound. Points raised by his counsel were—first, that the child had not been born ; second, that there was not sufficient corroborative testimony to enable the case to go to the jury on prisoner’s own admission of guilt. The case was argued at, considerate length by Dr. Fodir, who quoted a large number of authorities on the subject. Ultimately, the conviction by the jury was affirmed. The other case before the Court was that ofT. IT. Knibbs, who was committed last session of stealing a lefcterfrnm-t.be private box at, the post office. Point raised by counsel was that the letter on being placed in the letter box, ceased to be vested in the postrnasT”, who was the prosecutor. The Court held this not, tenable, and affirmed the conviction by jury. UUNEDIX January 9. Christina Clarke, of Havelock, near Lawrence, was committed for trial for wilful murder by a Coroner’s Jury. She gave birth to a child on the 27th n’timo, and three days after the infant was found wrapped up in flannel in her bedroom by one of Tier umghhors. Medical evidence testified to the child having been born alive. January 11. A serious accident occurred this morning near the southern cemetery, where excavations are being carried on by means of prison labor. There were 35 men present, and a shot was put in at the top of the bluff, about 50 feet high. The, men wwe then removed to a distance of 100 yards. On the shot going off, 1,500 tons of earth weredisplaced the fragments being scatter ed through the air in n'l directions. Part of the shower o ! ’ earth fell noon the g"onp of prisoners and laborers, knocking four of them down. One prisoner had his leg broken, another was rendered insensible from a severe wound on the back of the head ; the other two were not much injured. Another necident occurred at the, sanm place during the afternoon, bv which a prisoner had the flesh stripned off the bone of his leg for several inches. January 12. The Ilcafhcote Coal Company struck the main scam of coal yesterday in their shaft, at a depth of 24G feet. HOKITIKA. January 10. Henry Youughaspurchaacd Learmonth’s six hundred acre lease on Mount Raugitoto. for £SOO cash, and £5,000 in paid-up shares on the formation of a enmnanv. The lease adjoins the prospector’s mine and is between that and Hudson’s. The Company is to he called the Zealand Silver Company, to he registered under the Joint Stock Company’s Act ; capital, £40.000 in 8,000 shares of £5 each. The promoters are fifteen in number, ami reserve 2,000 paid-up shares and £I,OOO cash on the formation of the Company. Mr Young has engaged (lie services of (lie original prospectors, and starts for the mine in a few days.
