COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTION.

(to the editor of the patea mail.) Sir, —Will you be good enough to_ publish the enclosed telegrams, for the information of the electors. I believe Mr Dale wishes to create an impression that it is through his efforts alone that the form of voting has been made clear. Let the electors judge for themselves. Telegram, dated 20th Dec., 1876. “To Hon. Major Atkinson, Wellington. Re Harbor questions. Please let them stand over. Will you kindly construe clause 61. Counties Act. Are cumulative votes allowed ? If so, upon what basis ? If District Rolls to be used, must they Lave been revised ? Can recent land purchaser not yet upon revised roll vote? Great difference of opinion here. Clear definition would give satisfaction.— G. Sherwood.” Another telegram was sent by me to the Hon. Major Atkinson, Wellington, dated 21st Dec. 1876. “ Kindly answer my telegram of yesterday. Am going up country, and should like to inform settlers. —G. F. Sherwood.” Telegram to G. F. Sherwood. “You ought to have received an answer early this morning, but through an error on my part the telegram went to Christchurch. Sorry forthc mistake. (Signed) H. A. Atkinson.” Telegram, 21st Dec. ’76. “ To G. F. Sherwood. I think that ‘persons who have votes, one or more, according to their qualification, under the 4th section of the Roads and Bridges Ordinance, can exercise them in the County election, and that it is not necessary to have paid rates, or to be upon any roll, if you arc an owner or occupier of land. A different qualification, of course, applies to that part of the County which formed part of the Province of Wellington. (Signed) H. A. Atkinson." Will you permit me to add, that I had previously urged the Returning Officer the necessity of having the matter made clear before the day of the election, and no doubt this would have been done, but I thought it would be better to have the points settled a,s soon as possible.—l am, &c., G. F. SHERWOOD.
