At Courtnc3'’s cattle sale the bidding was spirited, and the following prices were realised :—Cows, from £7 12s Gd to.£B 3s ; steers, £5 15s to £7 7s GJ ; yearlings, £B 10s to £2-178 Gd ; calves, £2 10s ; working bullocks, £1.7 a pair. Arthur 1 Standish was elected -Mayor of the Borough of New Plymouth by a large majority. The County election coming off is not causing much excitement. AUCKLAND. December 20. Thofollowingis the result of the election of Mayor : —Hurst,' 1,02G, elected ; Cosgrave, GOG. December 22. The gunboat Reynard, from Sydney, and H.M. Sapphire are likely to remain here six weeks. 11.M.5. Pearl leaves Sydney shortly for Auckland, thence goes home. 11.M.S Wolverine takes her place as Australian flag-ship. At the inquest on the murdered man, Denis Shanaglian, a verdict of willul murder was returned. The immigrants per Jessie Osborne are rapidly .securing engagements. The single girls are nearly all engaged. GRAIIAMSTOWN. December 20. The election of Mayor resulted in favor of M‘Donald, with 48-1 votes, against IGO for Kilgour, who it was understood was brought out by Sir George Grey’s party, with which the defeated candidate has been prominently associated. WELLINGTON. December 20. The Australia, with the inward ’Frisco mails, left San Francisco on the 7th inst. The City of New York, with the November outward mails, readied San Francisco on the 12th inst., two days under contract time. December 22. O’Shea reports produce prices as follows: —Flour (Hobarton), unsaleable at £l7 ; Adelaide, £lB 10s to £l9 ; Colonial, £ls to £l6 ; oats, 2s 8d to 3s ; bran, Is ; wheat, none ; pollard, 7s ; hams and bacon, B]d to Did ; maize, 4s 6d ; dieese, 7£d to 8d ; potatoes, £G to £7. GREYMOUTH. December 20. Daniel Bran iff, W. Wood, and J. Wood were charged at the police court this morning on four informations with having an illicit still in their possession. The case was remanded till Friday. A large quantity of apparatus was seized. Peter White, proprietor of the Commercial Hotel, committed suicide this morning, in the Cemetery, by shooting himself over the grave of his children. The supposed cause is domestic grievances. PORT CHALMERS. December 20. The Rotorua stopped two days at St. Vincent and the Cape. She sails on the 30th for Sydney, via Lyttelton, Wellington, Nelson, Taranaki, and the Manukau, and will run permanently on that line. jCHRISTCHURCH. December 20. The workmen engaged in dressing white stone for the girl’s sdiool to-day found two shark’s teeth and one dolphin’s tooth embedded in the stone, all in a beautiful state of preservation, the enamel being bright and unblemished. DUNEDIN. December 20. Arrived—Union Company’s s.s. Rotorua, from Glasgow, after a voyage of GO days. It is understood that, in consequence of Mr Maoamlrew having forwarded I lie Home Agent’s letter to Wellington, and which resulted in pieventing a remittance which was asked for being sent Home by the outgoing mail, the Hon. Mr McLean has ordered Mr Macandrew’s box at the post office to be closed. A telegram received from Hobarton announces the arrival of the Union Company’s steamer Wanaka this morning. After coaling she will leave to-morrow for Port Chalmers. December 21. The Otago County Council will meet on the 4th of January next. The Wairau Riding in Southland is the only Riding in Otago for which no candidate came forward.
The body of Captain Lindsay of the William Ackers, was washed ashore near the wreck. inYercargill. December 21. The inquiiy into the cause of the loss of the barque William Ackers closed to-day with the following findings : —That tbo loss of the vessel was occasioned through the -Captain keeping his vessel too close to land, and the' Joss of the Captain and seven men is mainly, if not entirely, (he result of the deck cargo getting adrift and destroying the boats. The Resident Magistrate’s Court has been occupied from 2 till half-past 6 hearing the charge against Cahlerwood for a murderous assault upon Hugh Duddy. The latter was able to appear in Court to give evidence, although still very weak, Ids head being bandaged up. Facts as previously narrated were brought out in evidence, Caldcrwood being remanded till Saturday, to-ailow another witness to be brought forward. KELSON. December 21. A fatal accident occurred this morning to Mr Marsden, an old settler fn Waimea. Ho was driving to town, when his horse took fright at a train and bolted. Mr Marsden was thrown out of the buggy, but did not appear to. be hurt. He stooped to unharness- the horse, led it to an adjoining stable, ami in a few minutes he fell down dead.
