HAWERA

(from our own correspondent.) December 20, The polling for the election of a Member to fill the vacancy in the Town Board, Haw era, caused by the resignation of Mr John Black, took place at the Block-house here on Tuesday last, and resulted in the return of Mr William J. Furlong. A special meeting of this Board will take place on Friday next, 22nd in’sf. It is very gratifying to learn that the subscription list for obtaining a resident medical gentleman in this township is being rapidly filled up, every one appealed to having heartily responded to the call upon them. —Rumour!? have reached my ears touching the intentionof a wellknown resident in Hawora to ascertain the desirability of memorialising the Government with a view to obtaining the services of a good engineer, to survey and report upon the entrance and approaches to the Waingongora River, in the hope that such report may prove favorable, and thereby open up direct communication by sea with northern'find southern ports. ‘ The idea is certainly a brilliant and original one, and I sincerely hope that the energetic and able promoter of such a scheme may

sec In's endeavors meet with success.. Repot goes that the approaches to the river arc- by no means of so dangerous a nature as those attending on the entrance to the Patca River, there being no treacherous silting of sand or dangerous boulder bank, &c. I hear that the mam difficulty wil l consist of removing a quantity of rocks and boulders, &c., which at present obstruct the entrance and channel of the river, and in forming a breakwater. If such a scheme could be carried into effect, it would prove of incalculable benefit to all classes of the community in these parts, and as the Waimate Plains must be opened np at no distant date, wo have no doubt that the trade will be well supported. A railway fr rn Hawera 10 the mouth of the Waiugougoro River, 4 miles, would complete the scheme.
