THE COUNTY NOMINATION.
The nominations of members for the Patea County Council, took place in the three rulings of Otoia, Hawera, and Wairoa, on Monday last, and though the-multiplicity of candidates expected did not turn up, still there were quite a sufficient number for the electors to have an opportunity of making a good selection. Owing to the nominations being in writing, and candidates not being called on to address the electors, the proceedings wore of tiie quietest description, and though there is considerable feeling on the subject of the election, it iiad no opportunity of finding vent on this occasion. On the polling day, which is fixed for the 27th, this will, we fancy, be very materially altered. For the Otoia district, including Carlyle, Whcimakura, Kakaramoa, and Manutahi, there were eight candidates nominated, viz., Messrs 11. S. Peacock, G. F. Sherwood, M. Williamson, Andrew Hunter, S. Taplin, W. Dale, jnn., Edwin 11. Morgan, and Edmund M. Honey field. In order to be a convenience to the electors, the Returning Officer for this poition of the County (MajorTuruer, li.M.) has arranged to open a polling place at Manutahi,'’ so distant residents will not have so far to travel.
For the Hawera, district, where Mr E. C. Meredith is Returning Officer, there were live gentlemen nominated—Messrs T. Middlcmas, J. Goodson, J. Davidson, A. Winks, and J. Livingstone, either of whom will be a creditable representative. There is a report afloat, whether founded on fact or not we cannot say, that prior to the polling day some arrangement will be made by which two of those wili drop out, and allow the other three to be. returned unopposed. At Wairoa, Mr C. C. Ilurrell is the Returning Officer, and received the nominations of Messrs J. W. Kennah, W. Wilson, G. S. Bridge, and T. Kells. Though the candidates arc limited, the contest is likely to be keen and close, but in this, as in other ridings, all offering themselves are unexceptionable, and the electors may expect to bo well served, on whomsoever the choice may fall. Here, as elsewhere, tiie polling will take place on the 27th instant.
There arc no events to chronicle in connection with either of the nominations, which, owing to causes already alluded to, passed off as quietly as could bo.
