From (ime to time we have urged some Fire brigade organisation, in the township, but hitherto without success; it is to bo hoped that the recent disaster will stimulate some such movement. Although at the last fire every one behaved admirably, owing chiefly to the example set by disciplined men, still there was an absence of the thorough command, that on snch trying occasions, is needed. It would, of course, be absurd 1 to expect a complete fire apparatus, an engine, and all surrounding paraphernalia, but a modest hook and ladder carnage might be obtained, possibly for the salvation of human life in times to come. A Volunteer Fire Brigade also, on an equally moderate-scale, might bo established, and, if such a scheme were startcd, we feel certain that plenty of young and active men would join to make the movement a success. The same kind of organisation .would, as a matter of course, be most useful in the townships of llawera and Wairoa, and we should lie glad to find ft established in all. Wo commend the subject to the consideration of property holders, with a hope that some action may be taken in the matter, and that, in case of any _ future calamity from fire occurring, the public may be better able to fight the foe. Dr. Giles, the Resident Magistrate of Wanganui, is now on an official visit here, ills business is, wc believe, of a delicate and painful nature, but we have every hope that it will eventuate in clearing up most satisfactorily what may at present appear_ dark and mysterious. We arc not in a position to say more at present, but, when matters arc settled, will be able to give full particulars. As will be seen in our advertising columns, Messrs Haywood and Williams return thanks to those who so zealously labored at the late fire for the preservation of their properties.
