A MtiKTIXO is called for to-morrow evening, •which should be attended by every one who lias the .smallest"spark of feeling in his composition, in reference to the establishing of a hospital for the .Patea district.
Tlie subject is so well-worn a one, the matter has been so repeatedly before thepublic,' that repetition, on repetition, becomes Wearisome, and it is almost necessary to apologise for again intruding oil the subject. But, we arc glad to say, the aspect of affairs has greatly changed for the better. Till quite recently, the oile great difficulty, tiie building, stuck out, and bow to surmount this trouble was the obstacle in the way. It was well-known that the charity of the people of the the district was quite equal to a’l Hie demands that could be made on it ; it was further known that funds to house all rllstarred folks could readily be gathered, but to get buildings and gionnd at once was another matter. However wellintentioned people may be, there is a limit to their good nature, that they themselves cannot overstep. So it is in connection with the proposed hospital. There are any number of persons wiio would gladly aid in its establishment, but whose means are not in keeping with their charitable instincts. The great difficulty is, however, now fSmovcd, the Government has placed certain buildings at disposal, and there is at present nothing to prevent the hospital becoming an actual fact without delay. As can be shown, the expense will be but trifling, after arrangements have been once made. The establishment of such an institution will be a positive benefit to employers of labor, as Well as to laboring men, and it is to the interest of all classes to establish it as soon as possible. We can so far vouch that the committee will. to-morrow night bo prepared to show them how the hospital can be maintained, even pending the hoped for County subsidy—presuming, of course, that the benevolence found elsewhere, be not Wanting in Patea. We will not urge the question further at present, but would most earnestly request all who care for their fellow creatures, sick, suffering, or in want, to attend the meeting to-morrow, and by their presence and their countenance, aid those who are in need—the blessings of many scores who may require aid will fall on them, a great and noble charity, if only on a small scale, will be inaugurated, and, in years to come, the founders of the hospital may live to be proud of their work. The meeting will bo held at the Court House to-morrow evening, at seven o’clock, and may all who read these lines attend.
