P0 R T 0 P PAT EA. AIIUIVKD. October 22.- Elizabeth, sc., from Polorhs; with a cargo of timber. UXPECTIin VIUUVAI.H. Jane Elkin, ketch, ftoni Peiorus. ' Wii can most regretfully, as ‘far as we •ti'e oohcet'iied, and most reproach fully, as far as the Government is concerned, refer to another disaster at the Hoads. On Sunday morning last, the schooner Elizabeth, timber-laden,for Messrs Morton mid Lupton, attempted to enter, but the craft was driven to the northward and went ashore. Every exertion was made by those on board her, as well as by the harbormaster, and she was discharged, floated, and now lies in safety at Hirst’s wharf. Some of the timber was lost, as it bad to be thrown overboard, but the proportion is trifling, and the vessel is comparatively uninjured. Captain Kennedy, of the s.s. Eashy, reports a curious incident on his last voyage from New Zealand to Sydney. He siiys :— ,l During the night of- the Ist and on the morning of the 2nd nit., several small fish dropped on board. The largest was about four inches in length. They had apparently no scales and sharp pointed heads. I intended to preserve them, but unfortunately the second officer, not being ware of their value, threw them overboard. The ship was in the longitude of Lord Howe’s Island at the time. There is no doubt that the occurrence was due to a waterspout. The night was squally and rainy with a very confused sea.” Captain Kennedy makes it a practice to keep a careful meteorological record during his voyages to and from Sydney, handing it over on arrival to Captain Edwin, who finds the information contained therein of groat valns in his weather report.”
