[Pun Press Agency.] NEW PLYMOUTH. August 3. A numerously attended meeting of the Egmout electors has been held at Okato. The following resolution was unanimously passed : —“ The electors of the Egmout district are of opinion that it is most undesirable that the provinces should bo divided into two Counties, and if the Act now before Parliament is passed, making the division as stated, it will act prejudicially as regards the interests of the province, and heaninjnsticcand disastrous to the northern portion of it.” In another resolution, the member for Egmout and other representatives are urged to strongly oppose the proposed division.

WELLINGTON. August 3. It is stated that great reductions will be made in the Estimates ; that some four hundred General and Provincial Government officers will lose their appointments ; and that the Volunteer vote for the South Island will probably be struck off, HOKITIKA. August 3. Luke Moore, a schoolmaster, has been convicted at the District Court on two charges of criminal assault on two children under twelve years of age. He pleaded guilty to a third charge, and was sentenced to two periods of imprisonment of six years each, and two floggings during the iirst six months.
