At a recent meeting of the Kaiapoi Farmer's Club, a gentleman gave an account of his shipment of grain to England, which will be particularly interesting to agriculturists. Last year he sent away 325 sacks, some of which, namely 152 qrs., sold at 545, some as high as 565, and other prices varying from 52s ; 3G2 bushels damaged fetching 24s to 31 s. The average of the total 425 quarters—496!bs per quarter, was 50s, or, in other words, 6s 3d a bushel. The cost of sending it from Kaiapoi to England was 2s 6d per bushel, and on that sent by him he had a price which here would be equal to Ss lOd per bushel. The freight this year was the same as last, so that, if wheat were to realise a higher price in the home market, the profit will be increased-r a consummation which' he anticipated. The speaker stated that the highest price he obtained was for Champion, the next being Hunter’s white velvet chaff, which he grew mixed on his land to enable the Hunters to support the chaff, as the latter produced an abundance of straw, while the other was not so long, and was besides strong and more why. The Tuscan brought the next highest price, and Pearl the lowest of all. Millers appeared to have a preference for Hunter’s white and velvet chaff mixed. A deputation of Good Templars recently waited upon the Victorian Minister for Education, to bring under his notice the desirableness of having the subject of alcohol from a physiological point of view, included in the topics introduced in the reading books in use in the State schools. The Minister promised to See how far the views of the deputation could be carried out.
