DOG TAX.
(TO THE KDITOR OF THE FATE A MAIL.) Sir, —As the time for paying the dog tax is approaching, I wisli to call attention of the tax-payers, Education Board included, to the unsatisfactory mode of collecting the above. On referring" to the Patka Mail of November 17th, 1875, I see that it cost £ls 15s. to collect £2ti Is. Does the Education Board think the owners of dogs take it,.as an honor to pay taxes just for the sake of creating a salary for any person bis Honor, the Superintendent ehoos s to appoint. I don't know what good the above tax was supposed to do, when our enlightened ex-M.P.O. proposed and carded it through the Provincial Council, considering the Maoris are allowed to keep as many dogs as they please to worry any one’s sheep, without being taxed, while any settler that requires a dog has to put his hand into his pocket and fork out live shillings for every dog ho keeps above'the number of one. I fail to see any good it was ever intended or ever will do, as at present imposed. Perhaps our ex-M.P.C. will enlighten the public on the subject, I am, &c., A DOG TAX-PAYER.
