A eommin?ieatioa from the Treasury was road, enclosing a cheque for e-Pi 13s •Id proportion of Government Grant to the Board for the years 1875-G. A loiter was received from Mr Rooking, Town Clerk of Wanganui, enclosing,- in reply to a letter from the Board, a copy of the bye 1 iws in force in that town. A reply to the same application, from the clerk of the Town Board of New Plymouth, stated that he could not forward a copy, as that body had no bye-laws. An application for improvements, by residents in Dcicester-street was made. A report was sent in by Bergeant Whelan on the sanitary condition of the Town, stating that the persons he had warned had effected the improvements necessary, but that there were other and serious mnsartces existing that needed remedy. A personal application was made by Mr Holtham, for some improvements in Cainbridgc-street, and the Chairman promised to consult the surveyor respecting them. A letter was also read from the Hon. Major Atkinson, enclosing the report of Mr Carruthers on' the needed Harbour Works. The above correspondence was dealt with as follows. With reference to Leicester-street, it was resolved that the formation of the footpath on the north side should be the next work undertaken.- The Town Clerks’ letters were received. On the report of Sergeant Whelan being considered, the Chairman suggested that he should be appointed Inspector of Nuisances, such an appointment being absolutely reeded, and the Board having power to make it. A long discussion ensued on this subject, sumo members doubling the power of the Board to make such an appointment, future deeming it unnecessary. After long debate, it was resolved that the appointment shotfld lie made and that it he offered to Sergeant Whelan or any other sergeant that might be in charge here. Mr Milroy moved that the site selected by the .Kc c-Tves Committee, as a depot for the deposit of night soil and rubbish, be approved by the Board.

The motion was seconded by Mr Rhodes and, after debate, agreed to. The Harbor "Works report was next brought up and elicited another protracted discussion as to the mode in which Major Atkinson's letter, accompanying the report slmifd be answered. The Chairman suggested that certain' meins at command should he pointed out. to the Government as affording seeiiritv tor the outlay. Mr Tapi in suggested that the Board should resolve themselves into committee for the purpose of considering the whole question ,* whilst Messrs Southhy ami 'Milroy did not think that the proposed llarhor Works were at all ne’eded Tint considered the river in its present state ample for all requip'-' merits. This opinion was not in by any.other members of the Board. ' EvehtvYally a motion by Mr Milroy, n That the best thanks of the Board bo . tendered to Major Atkinson and that the Board hoped be, as the representative of the district, would do bis best to see the : works carried out,” was carried. The Town Clerk' brought up a statement 1 of account, by which it appeare.il that after all payments, for which the Board was liable, bad been made, including salaries,to the end of this month there would be a balance in their favor of £ls 13s l>d. Uncollected rates amounted to £22 125.,which would bring up the credit halauco to £3B 5s Gd. Oil the motion of Mr .Milroy a balance of £5 on the sum voted for the eonstnettibn'of the wharf road was allotted towards making a drain from.the brewery, repairing - new formation, and draining tin; swamp. The tender of Mr Keys for the supply of gravel at 4s (id per load was accepted. Payments of ,£2 to Mr llammerton forth o preparation of the clerk’s bond and £95 for the wharf road contract were ordered. _■ In replv to a question the Cnainnau said that the Reserves Committee had inspected the various reserves, as, far as they, were able, but had not. been able to do .all they' wished, as they could not define the pegs. Mr Williams bad promised to go' round with them on a future occasion to point out the bbnndaries. As yet they bad not received notice of the reserves being formally banded'over and gazetted, and, till this was the case, they could take < ifo action. ft would be better to call aiV emergency meeting when it was received and deal with.<tie reserves at once. The latter idea was' opposed by Messrs- ' .ScmthPy anti Williams, but agreed to by the other members, who thought that, in the financial position .of the Board, notime should be lost in' obtaining all the revenue possible. The Board then adjourned till the first. Monday in April.
