muons aciovcv. AUCKLAND. June 1. Reader Wood has been gazetted Provincial Secretary. There is a household tax of £l, and a bachelor tax of 10s levied for education for the ensuing year. A Rotorua telegram states that a party of threjtigentlemen (Adams, Kemp, and GiIGAWn) on their way in a canoe to Manuperua Spring, Rotorua Lake, were capsized in a gale on the 27th May, between Ohinemutu and the island of Mokoia. J. Gilfillan, of Wanganui, was drowned ; but the other two, by sticking to the bottom of the canoe, drifted towards Mokoia, from whence the accident had been witnessed by some natives, who made several attempts to launch a canoe to go to their rescue. Upon the canoe drifting within a short distance of the island, a native woman courageously swam to their assistance, bringing the survivors to land. They were put into a hot bath, which soon restored them. The state of the lake prevented communication with the mainland until Saturday morning. The body of Gilfillan has not yet been recovered. Quite a gloom lias been cast over the district by tbe accident, as Gilfillan was much respected. The Mary Webster, on her passage from Taranaki, encountered a fearful gale, and lost 243 sheep. The hatches had to he battened down, owing to the water going down and drowning some sheep. Other reports from vessels on the West Coast show very severe gales from the 24th to 27th. CHRISTCHURCH. Juno 1. Extension of Southern Railway from Ashburton to Rangatata, a distance of 20 miles, was opened yesterday. This makes a distance of 70 miles opened from Christchurch southward. The N.Z.S. Company received advices from London to-day that contracts Lad been made for the immediate building of five iron ships of highest class at Lloyds, and of extra strength. Each ship will be 1,000 tons register, and be named as
be 1,000 tons register, and be named as follows:—Hnrnnni, Waipawa, Wairon, Orari, and Otaki. They will arrive in the Colony in time for the next wool season. The City Council have decided upon the general use of earth closets in the city.
