LONDON. May 8. The reported arrival of the Californian mails on the 4th was false. The steamship Schiller, homeward bound from New York, with Australian and New Zealand mails via ’Frisco, and over ‘260 passengers, has been totally wrecked off Scilly Isles. Only a few passengers were saved. The Berlin Post considers the recent Belgian note in reply to Germany as meaningless and unsatisfactory. Thfi booUl, /vT_. mv precarious. April exports from Great Britain show an increase on the previous months. Wheat is depressed. Metals unchanged. Menzhctli promised to introduce legislation to protect the State, and administer ecclesiastical property. He also states that the relations with Germany were excellent. A vote of confidence in the Government was passed. Bourkc announced that the Government had received an entirely satisfactory assurance that Germany had no cause to apprehend disturbance. The Brindisi mail was delivered yesterday. The passengers by the Schiller were principally Germans, no Australians traceable. There were 56 mail bags, chiefly newspapers, saved. The collier strikes in South Wales have ended, and the men arc returning to work at the masters’ conditions. The Czar and Count Schakoff interviewed Bismarck immediately on arrival at Berlin. It is generally supposed the Czar exercised a pacific influence. Prussia voted for the suppression of religious orders. GALLE. May 8.
