"WASTE NOT WANT NOT."
TO THE EDITOR OF THE RATEA MAIL. Sir, — “ And they gathered up the fragments that remained,” such was the lesson ' of frugality taught to the first disciples, and the lesson has not been thrown away upon the followers of a disciple of later date. Given the use of Government buildings, Government men to clean and garnish the rooms, lamps, kerosene, also piano and musical and vocal talent, to add life and zest to the farewell entertainment to a departing genial minister. The charge small to cover expenses, the public always willing to pay a trifle to meet together and enjoy themselves in their sober “old country” fashion ; and more willing on this occasion so as to show their regard for a minister who has won their regard as a true man in his daily intercourse with them. Everything promised a happy evening for our small community, and all parties looked forward to enjoy themselves, especially the younger portion, as it had gone forth from those who should know from their oftentimes carrying the-hag that there Avould also be a dance to windup after the soiree ; but all is not gold that glitters. The dance was not intended for “ common people —it was a glittering delusion dangled before their eyes in order to induce them to roll up /with the ready money. Country bumkins visiting the Zoological pay a trifle to sec the bears fed, and our soi-disant “upper ten” Government officialdom ami their tail have had a cheap treat in seeing the commonality guzzle tea, and in return treated a little music, an edifying lecture, aIW then bundled them off the premises, so that they could enjoy the dance without contamination- What became of the gathered up fragments and cold tea, ask the “ Upper Ten.” They had such a nice ball, and so very inexpensive. Yours, &c., FRUGALITY.
