VESSEL IN PORT. Tongariro, p.s. The very long period of dry weather has had the effect of diminishing the amount of water in the river to a serious extent. Indeed, the oldest resident never saw the river so low. The Ino was detained for a long time in consequence of there not being sufficient water. No doubt when the wet weather sets in the river will get a thorough cleansing, as such is sadly needed. The p. s. Tongariro on leaving the river on Saturday morning unfortunately grounded on one of the mud flats nearly opposite the flagstaff. She is likely to suffer detention in her present uncomfortable position till the next springs make.

THE SUPPOSED SURVIVORS OF THE COSPATRICK.—The telegrams on Saturday reported the arrival of two more Cospatrick survivors in England, but this is contradicted and explained by the “ Dundee Advertiser ” of February 9 : —“ The rumour that the survivors of the Cospatrick were on board the Coldstream, from Coconada, which arrived in the West India Docks, London, yesterday afternoon (February, 8), gave rise to considerable excitement when it became known that there was no foundation whatever for that rumour, beyond the fact that a man from Java, who was suffering from dysentry, was in hospital with MacDonald, Lewis, and Cotter, at St. Helena. The captain of the Coldstream regrets that the pilot at Brixham misunderstood the message, which was shouted to him from on board, Messrs. Shaw, Saville and Company instructed their agent to board the Coldstream at Gravesend, and had made arrangements to have the wants of the expected survivors supplied. Their offices, and those of Messrs. Teigh and Smith, the owners of the Coldstream, were besieged by anxious inquirers.” The “ Advertiser’s ” Plymouth correspondent telegraphs : —“ Although the captain of the Coldstream says that what he told Salisbury, the pilot, was that the two men pointed out had been in St. Helena Hospital with the Cospatrick survivors, Salisbury persists that what he was told was that the two men were themselves survivors of the Cospatrick, and this he formally reported in writing on reaching the shore. Salisbury, being a trustworthy pilot of long standing, is anxious to be brought face to face with the Coldstream captain, and being amendable to the Trinity Board, it is hoped that that body will institute a thorough investigation.”
