'The Maori chiefs of Taupo cannot be said to be wanting in gratitude,” states an extract from the New Zealand Herald that journal publishes from its’ hies of 50 years ago. “A. few months ago, they were starving for want of food. They were given supplies by Mr Robert Graham, and, in return, they gave him a block of land at Wair’akei, including some hot springs.” It is interesting to recall that this gift by the Maoris led to the existence of the popular tourist resort at Wairakei.
