INTERFACULTY DEBATE

COMMERCE DEFEATS LAW.

On Wednesday evening a keenly contested debate took place at the University. The Law Faculty -was represented by Alessrs Alowat, Joel and Guest, and Commerce by Alessrs E. J. Thomson, J. J. Thomson and Gilkison. The subject, “ That Advertising Is Not in the Best Economic Interests of the Country,” was supported by Law, while the negative was taken by Commerce. Alany speakers took part in the open discussion, bringing in many points to show how good advertising was in the best economic interests of all. The judge, Air T. J. L. Rantin, placed Commerce the winners of the debate, and the speakers Air E. J. Thomson and Air Alowat first, and Alessrs J. Thomson and Gilkison, second. Two recent meetings of the Commerce Debating Society showed the keen interest taken by commerce students in public speaking. In an impromptu speech competition, judged by Mr Grace, 18 speakers took part. They were placed in this order: E. J. Thomson, W. North, A. Ibbotson, G. Gilkison, Douglas and Stewart. A debate on “ Balanced Proportional Representation ” was largely attended. Alessrs Gilkison . and Douglas supported the. affirmative, while the negative was taken by Messrs E. J. Thomson and Guthrie. Mr E. J. Anderson judged the negative as winners of the debate and placed Mr E. J. Thomson the best speaker of the evening.
