RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.
SOUTH CANTERBURY MEETING.Saturday, June 20. •i”: iThe ; South Canterbury Jockey Club-, held its winter meeting in very cold Weather. There was a good attendance, and business on the totalisator showed'an increase on last year’s figures, when; -: however, the meeting took place in bad weather. The track was as hard as in ■ midsummer, and the jar in the ground probably caused some of the horses to dwell at the hurdles and fences. The card prov ded some very interesting racing and close finishes. The Prince Edward Handicap saw the field run in fairly close order all the way, and at the finish r Royal Saxon, First Raid, and Inevitable flashed past the judge'with very little ' between them, while Glehrowah, who-had ■lost ground at the rise of the barrierput in a good run in the straight, out !• it came too late to get him amongst: ? the placed lot. Inevitable was responsible for the pace-making, with First Raid and Royal Saxon ’ in close attendance. : Royal Saxon was ' well and patiently '
handled, and got the verdict by a welltimed finish. Inevitable was always travelling well until inside the distance, but he then commenced to fade after being nursed to see out the distance. The high scale of weights no doubt anchored some of the horses. Starshooter appeared to be unlucky, as 100 yards from home he was racing behind the three leaders, who were running in line. This left him without an opening, as Glenrowan came up on the outside and completely shut him in. Glenrowan appeared to be the unluckiest horse in the race, as the ground lost at the start cost him a good chance of winning. Mount Boa created a surprise in the chief sprint. The distance was deemed too short for him, as he usually loses ground at a start. He did so again, but once in the tsraight he came with a brilliant run and won racing away at the finish.: The hot pace set in the early stages no doubt caused the leaders to stop at the finish, but even so Mount Boa put up a brilliant performance. During the day £9308 10s went through the totalisator, as compared with £8621 10s last year. PUKAKI HURDLE HANDICAP, Of lOOsovs. One mile and a-half. 2— Mr F. R.
