AUCKLAND TOPICS.
By Digger Since winning at the Great Northern meeting Billy Boy has trained on well. He is a finished fencer that will do still better in hunters’- events. His next appearance will be at the Taumarunul meeting, to be held at Ellerslie. Ruffles ran good races wtihout getting the chief prize at Te Rapa. He is now a fit horse, and being a real mudlark, may do better still at the coming fixture to be held at Ellerslie. Coal Mint disappointed his connections at Te Rapa, but no fault could be found with his jumping. He was left at Te Rapa in charge of M. J. Carroll, who will take him and Prince of Orange to the Wellington winter meeting. Prince of Orange is coming back -to form,- and may soon get on the winning list. Star,'Comet has developed a. bad habit of falling in his races. He won well on the first day of the Waikato meeting, but toppled over on the second day, making his third fall in four starts. He is good enough to have a. chance at Wellington if he could be relied upon to fence correctly. '
Lucess was a' tired horse at Te Rapa. He may need freshening up before again showing his best, but he is well enough .conditioned to come on again quickly, and he may be right for Wellington. " It is understood that Master Lu will not be raced at Trentham, -but that he will be kept for the Grand National at Riccarton. He is a clever jumper over big fences, and a good stayer that will be hard to beat any time over the Ion" journeys.
The hunter Town Beauty has been kept going since racing early in the month. He is getting beter all the time and is sure to do well in hunters’ events during the rest of the winter. Catoma is none the worse for his four races, at Ellerslie, in. which he did best at his last outing. He let his early backers down badly, but those who stick to him should be on. the right side of the ledger. at the end of the winter. It is now nearly time that True Blood struck form. He is one of the best horses in the north under, winter conditions, and his progress from now on should repay watching. He will probably race at the Taumarunui and Wellington meetings. The Ellerslie trainer, Frank Weston, died during the week after a long illness, during which he showed great fortitude and kept on his feet to the last. He was a Well-known figure locally, having been associated with the racing game as a rider and trainer for many years. Claremore is expected to make the trip to Trentham next month. He was not as fit as he can be made when he raced at Ellerslie, and his future as a steeplechaser is regarded very hopefully. One of the local horses that is hitting out freelj- in the soft ground is Gay Cockade. He ran a splendid race in the Cornwall Handicap, and promises to be very, hard to beat in the big events at the Taumarunui meeting. High Pitch has not run a bad race since he commenced hurdling, and -.he seems to be getting, better all the time. He will-be a hard horse to beat in the’ chief hurdle races at Trentham.
