PALMERSTON.
The annual trials of the Palmerston n? i IC . C ,1> were hcld on Mr John lliilips Hill Hampton property. The first day was dull, but Tuesday and Wednesday were fine. There were record entries in all events, competitors being present from as far as Southland and Canterbury, as well as the usual number from North Otago and Central Otago. A £ o °d number of spectators were present. Most of the work has been good, and the trials promise to eclipse anypreviously held here. Mr Peter Boyd, of Lovell’s Flat, is the judge. The following are the results:— Class 1. —Open ami maiden heading; 54. entries. This was commenced on Monday, and finished on Tuesday. Open.— John Anderson’s Toby, jun., 38 points, 1; John Anderson’s Toby, 37, 2; C. Smith’s. Chance, 36, 3; John Anderson’s Risp, 33, 4; C. M'Leod’s Nell, 31, 5. Toby, jun., cast on right, running out on good line, came as far as the crossing in the gully, redirected the cast out; headed in Imin lOsec; made good clean head, lifted sheep very steadily; pulled sheep very steady; dog under good command all the way; style good at ring; yarded in 7min 51sec. Toby cast on right, had to be redirected twice; made a good clean head, lifted well, pulling steadily at start; swung sheep and let them off the line; pulled sheep well after crossing the swamp; work at yards good. Maiden.—W. Monk’s Rough. 27 points, 1; D. Munro’s May, 26, 2; J. Smillie’s,' Cloud, 25. 3. Rough cast to right, ran out on good line; ran along the side of the fence, running well: slightly overran his head; headed in 2min 20sec; pulled sheep in good line, giving way a little sheep at yards; good style at yards, but failed to yard. May ran out in fair line, came in slightly on the run out; was redirected, took a cast, ran out. and headed in 2min; pulled sheep steadily at start: let sheep slightly off the line; pulled a little fast; inclined to be too eager at yards, split sheep twice at yards; yarded in 7min 45sec. Open Heading.—J. Anderson’s Tobv 48 points. 1; A. Miller’s Runt, 47 points.’ 2;' J. Anderson’s Rip, 46 points. 3; A. Miller’s Kip, 45 points, 4; J. Anderson's Toby Junior, 44 points, 5. Thirty-four entries. Toby cast to right, and made a clean run out. Headed in 57sec; lifted well, and under good command; pulled well on good line under great command. Ringed by front door in 6min lOsec through hurdles; good grip of sheep, and did not let sheep away after going through in 7min lOsec at first attempt. Work at yards very good, and yarded in 7min lOsec. Runt cast to right, ran well, and made a good clean head in Imin 20sec; lifted well, and then allowed sheep to drift after leaving tussock. Ringed in smin. held first atthrough hurdles first attempt in smin 50sec. Style at yards good; yarded m Bmin 4sec. During an interval Mr John Anderson, of Ngapara, and Mr J. M'Lean, Wakatipu, gave addresses on the proposed formation of a South Island championship association and the publication of a stud book. The Maiden and Open Huntaway competitions were in progress during the afternoon, and some very good work was done. The local events will conclude the meeting.
