THE GISBORNE RAILWAY
LINKING UP WITH MAIN TRUNK. GISBORNE, June 4. “The only figures I have any knowledge of in connection with your railway are those contained in a report to Parliament made in 1924-25, which indicated that the line represented a 4 per cent, investment,” stated the Leader of the Opposition (Mr J. G. Coates) in a review of the Gisborne Railway Committee’s case. Mr Coates stated further that these figures were compiled after a full inquiry as to the cost of construction as estimated at that time, and of the anticipated revenue, and that they had been sufficiently encouraging to decide the Reform Government 3 of” the day to proceed with the linking up of Gisborne with the main trunk railway system of the North Island. This statement was made by Mr Coates during a discussion with members of the Gisborne Railway Committee of the district case in respect of the railway connection.
