DEMONSTRATION AT MINE
UNION OFFICIALS CHARGED SUBSTANTIAL FINES IMPOSED. WESTPORT, June 2. As a result of the demonstration against the co-operative workers at the Charming Creek mine on May 26 James M’Bride and John Russell, president jmd secretary respectively of the Westport Stockton Miners’ Union and William Clark and Robert M'Gregor (president and secretary of the Millerton Miners’ Union appeared before Mr W. Meldrum S.M., in court to-day to answer charges of intimidation. After a lengthy hearing, during the course of which it was stated that about 200 miners took part in the demonstration and that threats were made to drag the co-operative miners out of the mine if they attempted to continue work, the magistrate convicted all four officials and fined M-Bride and Russell £5 each or 14 days’ imprisonment, and Clark and M’Gregor £2 each or seven days’ imprisonment. Clarence Victor Olsen, Henry Baden Watkins, Hubert Turnbull and David Auld, charged, with behaving in a disorderly manner at Ngakawau on the same day, were each convicted. Auld was fined £2 and costs and the other defendants were each fined £1 and costs.
