WASTE LANDS
QUESTION OF UTILISATION BULK PRIVATELY OWNED. WELLINGTON, June 5. The outstanding importance of the work being carried out by the Lands and Survey Department was emphasised by the Minister of Lands (Mr E. A. Ransom), speaking to-day at a function in honour of the Under-secretary (Mr J. B. Thompson), who is retiring. In the course of his remarks Mr Ransom referred to the suggestion of a newspaper correspondent that the department should take over 100,000 acres and cut it up into small sections for the unemployed, but he would like to know where they were going to get 100,000 acres. The fact was that the bulk of the waste lands were privately owned and only a very small quantity belonged to the Crown. At the same time he believed the time had arrived when they would have to take the whole question of waste lands into consideration. He would not hesitate to assist in passing legislation calling upon those who had the necessary capital to bring the land into production X>r else surrender it to the Crown on a satisfactory valuation.
