WAIRARAPA CHAMPIONSHIP. MASTERTON, June 1. The final of the Wairarapa golf championship was won by J. Hornabrook, who defeated T. H. Horton, 5 and 4. Horton was generally outplayed, his putting being lamentable for such a good player. Hornabrook played brilliant all-round golf, and put .up a sterling performance to retain the title won last year.
THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP WIN FOR ARMOUR. LONDON, June 5. The open golf championship was won by Armour with a score (four rounds) of 296. Jurado was second with 297. The Australian, Stewart, with 315, was a long way behind the leaders. Toin Armour is a United States representative. A native of Edinburgh, he went to the States ten years ago, and turned professional. Jurado is a South American. The title last year, and also the British amateur title, was won bv “ Bobby ’ Jones (U.S.A.). Other scores were:— Alliss and Sarazen 298. Macdonald-Smith and Farrell 299. Churio and Davies 300. Lacey 301. Havers and Cotton 302. Mitchell, Horton Smith, Genta and Williamson 303. Dallemagne, R. Whitcombe, Oke and Hunter 304. Boomer and Robson 306. Holland and E. Whitcombe 307. Hodson, Twine, and Kirkwood 30S. Compston and C. Whitcombe 309. Duncan 312. Easterbrook 313. Stewart (with two others) 315. Gadd 317. Rex and Hartley 321. Forty-six had lower aggregates. Armour, who is Scottish born, was victorious after one of the most thrilling finals in the championship. It was played in a difficult wind in the presence of a great crowd. Armour played beautiful golf. He exploited his gifts of very straight hitting, hard driving and brilliant iron plav. He holed long putts. • - *
Cotton, the British hope, cracked early. Alliss once heartened British supporters, but two disastrous holes spoilt a splendid round. Jurado, whom the Prince of Wales followed, fought nobly. He bad the cup dashed from his lips when he seemed like winning. With two holes to go he mysteriously fluffed a tee shot into the brook, and was also bunkered, leaving him wanting a 4 to tie. Amid the tensest excitement, despite an excellent approach, the ball slithered past the brink of the hole. THE RYDER CUP. LONDON, June 6. Jolly had resigned from the Ryder Cup team owing to loss of form. Havers will replace him, and Bert Hodson has been invited to fill the last place. BELLEKNOWES DEFEATS TOKO. A team from the Toko Golf Club (Milton) comprising six ladies and six men players visited the Belleknowes Club on the King’s Birthday for a friendly match. The weather was fine, and a very enjoyable game ensued. The Belleknowes Club proved victorious, due in no small way to the fact that local knowledge played a big part. Mr C. Hitchon, captain of the Toko Club, in thanking the Belleknowes Club for its hospitality, expressed the wish that the game would be made an annual one. Mr S. Roberts responded on behalf of the local club. OTAGO CLUB. The St. Andrew’s Cross competition was played on the Balmacewen links ou Saturday afternoon. The cold southerly wind which swept across the course was not conducive to good scoring. The senior competition was won by A. C. Begg with 84—8 —76, a good score considering the conditions, and the junior ’event went to A. E. M’Dougall with a net score of 78.
