The Waipu Caves, situated seven miles and a-half off the man Whangarei-Waipu highway, are of limestone formation, and the circuit inside is about 300 yards. The entrance is guarded by giant punga ferns. The limestone formation is exceptionally fine (says the Northern Advocate), anil the myriads of glow-worms give a delightful effect. One peculiar feature is that the glow-worm does not extinguish its light at the sound of the human voice, and can be inspected at close quarters by candle light, when its radiance still glows. One hundred and fifty empty beer barrels were back to Dunedin from Wanganui by the Holmdale last week. The wharf at Taupo quay presented a scene of activity, 40 men with trolleys wheeling the barrels to the side of the ship ready for the men at the winches to swing them into the hold. In addition to the “return empties,” 135 sacks of pumice from Aramoho were being shipped to Christchurch, where they will be used tor refrigerating purposes. General cargo was also being loaded. The past week on the wharf had been one of the busiest for some time.
