IRISH MOSS.

One of Ireland’s minor industries, and one which provides a product, though small in proportion, at least of world-wide application, is the gathering and marketing for sale of the so-called moss or seaweed, botanically known as Chondrus Crispus, and locally cvalled Carrageen, 1 earl Moss, or Irish Moss. It grows extensively on the northern shores of the Atlantic Ocean, and particularly on the north coast of Ireland. Collectors go out to the rocks at low tide in -boats with rakes and gather their supplies, the plants then being dried in the sun in bleaching beds. on sandy beaches. The mercantile article makes a?. gelatinous creamy, thick fluid when prepared . with v-ater. It is the demulcent qualities of this last product that makes Irish Moss so suitable for a cough remedy, and at the same time this-gelatinous soup is not lacking i n nutritive properties. Prepared, in the well-known form of Bonnington’s Irish Moss,” it is perhaps the most widely known and universally used cough remedy now- on the market, and as well is perhaps the most effective for general use—that is, for both old people and young. This interesting article is also made use a number of other ways besides being a splendid basis for the manufacture of ju-jubes, particularly those of the throat pastille variety, as, for instance, Bonnington’s Jubes are also quite well known.—2/6/31.
