A quantity of gold-bearing conglomerate was washed in the Hutt River by Mr W. R. Smyth, managing director of the Golden Crescent Gold Mining Co., near Lawrence (Otago) for the purpose of proving to Government officials the rich gold borne in the material. At Lawrence are to be found vast deposits of cement conglomerate, one ton of which was brought to Lower Hutt for testing. A high yield was obtained. Our picture shows Mr Smyth washing a panful of the material in the presence of Messrs A. H. Kimbell (Under-Secretary of Mines, right), P. Marshall (Department of Scientific Research), and W.
