FIRE.
PROMPT SAVE EFFECTED. Shortly after 1 o’clock on Thursday morning a passer-by noticed flames anil smoke issuing from an upstairs window in the premises of the Dunedin Button, Hemstitching, and Embroidery Company at 76 Princes street. He immediately put through a call to the Central Fire Station, and in a few minutes three of the brigade’s machines were on the spot, another arriving after a short time. The first bad then gained a fairly strong hold, but several leads of hose were trained on it, and it was soon ui dec control. The room in which the fire started was burnt out, and the ceiling was slightly damaged. The stock of Cookham House, the boot store directly below the seat of the ■ outbreak, was saved from damage by being covered with salvage sheets, but nevertheless a small amount of water damage occurred to the building. No theory can be advanced as to the cause of the fire, and no insurances were available this morning.
