SHEEP DOG TRIALS.
FIXTURES. Ngapara—June 8. 9. ami 10. Warepa.—June 10, 11. 12. Palmerston South.—June 15, 16, 17. MILLER’S FLAT CLUB. The Miller’s Flat Collie Dog Club held its twenty-fifth annual dog trials on May 25 and 26 on the property of Messrs Jopson Bros., Messrs Kain Bros, providing sheep for the meeting. The’weather throughout was fine, and a fairly large crowd of spectators witnessed some good work done by several notable performers at dog trials such as these. Mr M. Fahey was judge, and in his usual efficient style gave entire satisfaction to all. At the Warepa championship meeting he will also officiate as judge. The meeting turned out in every way a success. The officials are to be complimented on the businesslike manner in which every detail was attended to. The Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union provided the refreshments and luncheons. The dance held on the first night of the trials was well patronised, everybody enjoying the music provided by Mr G. Strachan’s orchestra. The following are the results:—
CLASS I.—MAIDEN. For dogs that have never won a first prize. Head, pull, and hold in ring. Points: Heading 10, pulling 10, command 10, work at ring 4, holding in ring 4. Distance 400 yards. Time, Bmin. Eighteen entries.—Mr A. Gibson’s Mop (33 points) 1, Mi’ W. Monks Rough (30 J points) 2, Mr E. Stiven’s Skookum (294 points) 3.
CLASS 2.—ALL COMERS. Head, pull, and yard. Distance about 600 yards. Time, lOmin. Points: Heading 10, pulling 10, command 10, work at yard 4, yarding 4. Seventeen entries.—J. Purdue’s Snap (31 points) 1, J. Purdue’s Sweep and W. Monk’s Speed (30J points), equal, 2, A. Craighead’s Tweed and W. Monk’s Rough (29J points), equal, 4. Snap yarded. Sweep showed good work, but failed to yard. Speed yarded, but crossed badly in his heading; otherwise showed good work.
CLASS '3.—MAIDEN HUNTAWAY AND SLEW between three sets of poles. Distance about 400 yards. Points: Huntaway 10, noise 10, slew 8, command 10, style 6. Time, Bmin. Seventeen entries. —Mr R. Adams’s Jack (354 points) 1, Mr A. Gibson’s Gyp (31 points) 2, Mr T. Stockdill’s Pat and Mr A. Crawford’s Mac (25 points), equal, 3. CLASS 4.—OPEN HUNTAWAY AND SLEW between three sets of poles. Distance, 500 yards. Time, lOinin. Points: Huntaway 10, noise 10, slew 8, command 10, style -6. ■ Seventeen entrjes.—Mr W. Monk’s Sweep (384 points) 1, Mr J. Barr’s Teddy (374 points) 2, Mr A. Gibson’s Gyp (34 points) 3. Mr T. Stockdill’s Rock (28 points) 4. Sweep won the Championship Huntaway at Miller’s Flat in the 1929 trials, in which 22 dogs competed. He has won at several trials this season, and put up a very creditable performance. Special Prizes.—Mr V. Waldron’s rose bowl to dog scoring most points in Class 3 (present holders—J. Smith 1930, M. Barr and T. Stockdill 1929) : R. Adams. Mr J. Purdue’s gold medal to maiden competitor scoring most points at tbe trials: J. Stiven.
WAIHEMO COUNTY. The Waihemo County Collie Club held its annual sheep dog trials on May 21, 22, and 23. The trials were very successful. there being 140 entries, and three full days were required to complete. The weather on the first day was very cold and squally. The second and third days, however, were fine. The huntaway course proved to be a very difficult one, and it is the intention of the club to have it altered for next year’s trials. The judge, Mr A. D. Murray, of Middlemarch. awarded the prizes as under: — Class 1. —Open and Maiden Heading, bringing Back, and Yarding. Open prizes: First £5, second £3, third £l, fourth 10s. Maiden prizes: First £3. second £2, third £l. Dogs entered for Maiden eligible for open prizes. Mr G. Ross’s special £1 Is for winner of Maiden. OPEN. Mr W. E. Aubrey’s Moss, 353 points 1 Mr W. Anderson.’s Bob, 35 points 3 D. Ross’s Stump, 34 points 4 The McLennan Memorial Cup for the dog scoring most points in classes 1 and 3 was won by W. E. Aubrey. The A. D. Bell Cup for best mustering team of three dogs (two huntaway and a header) in classes 2 and 4 was won by C. M'Erlane. L. Bowker secured the Ron Galloway Memorial Cup, open to residents of Waihemo County, for dogs scoring most points in classes 1 and 3; and W. E. Aubrey won the J. Chapman Cup for dogs scoring most points in classes 1 and 3. The T. B. Bowker Cup for dogs scoring most points in classes 2 and 4 went to W. H. Monk. Mr G. P. Philips’s special for £1 Is for unplaced competitor scoring most pointe at trials was won By G. P. Johnston,, and Mr G. P. Johnston’s special of £2 2s for youngest competitor by L. Bowker. J. and J. Arthurs’s special was won by J. Scott.
