“ You people have too many things to play with, and you are very close to the border-line of madness.” This statement was made, in objection to their manner of life, to the Chinese people 2500 years ago by the philosopher, Lao Tze. It was quoted in Christchurch the other evening in the course of an address on Chinese philosophies by Dr T. Z. Koo, who added that he was inclined sometimes to believe that, though it had been made to refer to a mueli less complex time, it was very true of the life to-day.

“ The amateur hunter is the best friend of the wild animal,” said Mr 11. T. Thomas, of Auckland, at a business men’s luncheon. Mp Thomas, who was hunting in Africa last year, said hunters were interested in wild beasts, and worked for their preservation. Many noted big-game hunters had established reserves for game in Africa and America. The openair life and the novelty of seeing beasts in their native state appealed to most hunters quite as much as the excitement of the actual chase.
