MASTERTON RACES. First Day—Friday, May 22. The Maeterton races were opened in cold, southerly weather. As the result of a few showers the course was holding. There was a fair attendance. The totalisator handled £6OOO, as against £12,963 in April last year, when eight races were held as against seven to-day. Taranto then led the favourite into the straight, but once m line Portray came again, and in a punishing finish won by a neck from Arajean, Taranto was third. FAREWELL HANDICAP.
