CYCLING. OPPERMAN’S BRILLIANT WIN. PARIS. May IS. Opperman won brilliantly in a four days’ road race at the Criterium du Bourbonnais against 40 well-known racing cyclists from France, Italy, and Belgium. Lamb, another Australian, finished twentysecond. OTAGO CLUB'S ROAD RACE. The Otago Amateur Cycling Club held the first road race of the “ Calder Mackay ” series on Saturday, from Mosgiel. over a 22-mile course. A large field of 21 riders faced the starter, and under .perfect weather conditions the riders set out. Owing to the non-appearance of his co-marker, G. Smith came up to the 30 seconds mark with M'Connell and Fletcher. The following are the official Tracings:—J. Ferguson (3min), 1; A. Hay (2min), 2; J. Taylor (2min), 3; A. Rosenbrock (2min), 4; J. THE OLYMPIC GAMES. WELLINGTON, May 21. It was decided at the last meeting of the New Zealand and British Empire Games Association to submit the name of Mr T. W. Leslie, of Wellington, as one of the official starters for the track events at the Olympic Games, to be held at Los Angeles next year. BOXING BROWN DEFEATS BALDOCK. LONDON, May 21. The negro bantam world champion, Al Brown, defeated Teddy Baldock, the referee stopping the fight in the twelfth round. Though Brown always looked the winner Baldock was no worse than outpointed up to the twelfth round, when, in addition to a crack on the jaw, he received a short right drive under the heart which sent him gasping to the floor. He rose on the count of eight, but was sent down again from a right chip to the face for six. Another right chip to the face dropped him again. The

referee at this stage intervened and awarded the fight to Brown. BATTALINO BEATS LA BARBA. NEW YORK. May 23. Battalino (9st) retained the Featherweight Championship, winning a 15-round decision from La Barba (Bst 13 jib). La Barba put up a good showing, but was at no time able to bother the champion seriously. DUNEDIN GUN CLUB. CUP TO D. C. JOLLY. The tenth annual competition for the M'Bride Alemorial Cup was held at the Dunedin Gun Club’s grounds, Green Island, on Saturday afternoon under ideal weather conditions, and attracted a large entry from members. Included among the many visitors were Air L. Curtis, of the Wakatipu Gun Club, and Mr J. Hunter, one of the local club’s life members. The conditions attached to the cup are almost on a par with a championship event, being an endurance test of 21 clay birds, from handicap marks, and the score board recorded excellent trapshooting. A sweepstake was held in conjunction with the cup, and the following were the best scores:—D. C. Jolly (13yds) 21 breaks (19 first barrel); R. M'Donald (16yds) 20, E. P. Graham (23yds) 19, R. K. Aitchison (11yds) 19, G. E. Turner (18yds) 18, T. D. Dalziel (a new member, I lyds) 18. A. King (15yds) 17, T. Long (12yds) 17, AV. Morland (13yds) 17, P. E. Wood (12yds) 16, A. J. White (14yds) 16, L. E. Wilson (11yds) 15. L. Curtis (12yds) 15. First sweepstake money went to D. C. Jolly, with R. APDonald second, and R. K. Aitchison, the best performer off 11yds, third. In presenting the cup to the winner for the second year in succession, the president (Air G. E. Turner) congratu lated the members on their efficient trapshooting, and expressed appreciation of the large muster, and the keenness of the members to win the coveted honour I of having the name engraved on the cup, which was the oldest trophy belonging to the club. Air Jolly was the first member to win the cup twice, and his 21 consecutive breaks received hearty applause when the cup was handed over with customary honours. In replying. Air Jolly said he was proud to be associated as the winner last year, and in defending the title this year, his recollections of the late Dr L. H. M'Bride increased his ardour again to hold the cup.
