CATTLE-DRIVING ON THE STREETS
THE PENINSULA GRIEVANCE.
[ That the prospect of cattle being driven; f by day to market through certain streets is • viewed with some apprehension -was apparent at the meeting of the City Council last week, when the following clause in theGeneral Committee's report was discussed; That permission be granted, during th* pleasure of the oounoil and at the risk, of the drover, for cattle fo be driven through the city, via Bay Tiew road* from 10 o'clock p.m. previous to market day until 9.30 o'clock a.m. on market day going to market; and from 4 odock p.m. o« market day until 8 o'clock A.m eft. I the following day, coming from market. Or Tapley, in moving the adoption of the report, drew attention to the fact of their Saving been approached by a deputation of residents of chr Peninsula, which had pointed out the disadvantages under which they laboured under the existingsystem. The. committee considered that these people good grounds for complaint, and that some steps should be taken to ensure the cattle bamtr sot into market in good saleable -condition, Cr -Burnett said he hoped the alauss* vould be sent bade for further consideration. He bad. a. very strong objection toany cattle being driven through the streetsof this town-. - He had had a good deal of experience of cattle in his time, and knew jvhat he was talking about- Anotberthing, the St. KiHa by-laws about to con*e into force would have something to say in the matter. He moved— "That this. clause be referred back." Cr Sullivan seconded the amendment. Cr Fiddis said th© committee could not have come to a better- decision. The street*. to be traversed bj the cattle were unfrequented, and the cattle were quiet. Most of them were cows, "as quiet »nd as-. harmless as lambs.*' Cr. Wilson said h*' would rather they weredriveo by way of E»t. Clair Park. Cr Tapper said that if Cr Burnett could only be prevailed upon to look at the maphe would readily see that the streets by which these cattle wer* to past were unfrequented. Cr 'Mailow said he believed that Q.Z9a.m. should be altered to read "9 aan." % Other speakers referred to the quietnessof the Penisula rattte. Or Burnett: I only saw one man killed outright by cattle, and he was killed by a dairy cow. Cr Tapley: But these cattle are tamebeasts. There is bo risk. You will seoby the report that all risk is to be borneby the drovers, and that the concession "will continue only at the pleasure of thecouncil. Cr Teprey went on to say that these animals were not the wild creatures. that Cr Burnett was accustomed to ia Central Otago. As to -objections beingraised by St. Kilda, he might say that the St. Kilda Council had already agreed tothis conoessioi being granted. - The council would' be quite safe, and if the system proved in any way obnoxious permission' could be withdrawn at any time. Cr Burnett's amendment was h>st, and: the- report was adopted.
